Mumbai-based architect Tejas Sidnal is pioneering a sustainable approach to building materials by transforming recovered black carbon into architectural tiles. His startup, Carbon Craft Design, sources recovered carbon waste from industrial processes, including tyre recycling and factory pyrolysis, and blends it with cement, recycled marble powder, and marble chips to create distinctive geometric-patterned tiles. This innovative process uses around 80% less energy than conventional tile-making and reduces carbon emissions. By collaborating with skilled artisans in Gujarat, Carbon Craft Design combines traditional craftsmanship with material research to create a product that balances sustainability and aesthetics. The startup has gained recognition for its work, including the Lexus Design Award India and the No Waste Challenge. Carbon Craft Design's approach offers a tangible starting point for addressing the construction industry's significant contribution to global carbon emissions. By giving waste a useful destination, the startup aims to prevent pollution and promote a cleaner future.
