In a breakthrough study, researchers at the University of Hull discovered that using tape can be a more effective and practical solution for flood protection than traditional sandbags. The study, commissioned by Flood Re, a joint initiative between the government and insurers, tested various types of tape, including synthetic rubber, duct tape, aluminum tape, and yellow plastic tape, on a standard front door. The results showed that these tapes reduced water leakage by 99% compared to an unprotected door, outperforming traditional sandbags. The Environment Agency estimates that 4.6 million people in the UK are at risk of surface water flooding, making this discovery a significant finding. The researchers found that tape is not only more effective but also easier to use, dispose of, and more affordable than sandbags. The study's findings provide practical evidence for householders to reduce damage when flooding threatens. The University of Hull's Property Flood Resilience lab (PFRlab) has been at the forefront of designing and developing practical solutions to safeguard homes and properties. The research aims to help householders prepare for flooding by providing them with the right products and knowledge to make a real difference.
