Former Sheffield United and Doncaster Rovers striker Billy Sharp has made a surprise return to football, joining Northern Premier League side AFC Rushden & Diamonds. The 40-year-old had announced his retirement last month, but has now rejoined the club to help with a player shortage. Sharp will make his debut for the team in their FA Cup match against Burton Albion, a historic moment for the club as it marks their first appearance in the first round proper of the competition. This will be Sharp's 814th professional appearance, a testament to his enduring career. Sharp first played for Rushden & Diamonds on loan from Sheffield United in 2005, scoring nine goals in 16 appearances. He went on to score 290 more goals at senior level before retiring from Doncaster Rovers this summer. Sharp's experience and skill will undoubtedly be an asset to the team as they face Burton Albion in the FA Cup.
