Shanghai's new Grand Opera House has opened along the Huangpu River, featuring three auditoriums and a striking spiral staircase that has garnered attention for its innovative design. The 1.6 million square foot complex is a cultural hub, hosting a variety of performances, from classical music to experimental productions. The spiral staircase, designed by Snøhetta, connects the ground level to a rooftop observation deck that doubles as a stage, allowing visitors to access it regardless of whether they're attending a show. This design element is meant to make the opera house a welcoming space for both residents and tourists, encouraging them to spend time there and experience the city. According to Kjetil Thorsen, co-founder of Snøhetta, the goal is for the building to become a part of everyday life, a place where people can meet and connect with others. The opera house was the result of an international competition won by Snøhetta in 2016, and the project was completed in collaboration with East China Architectural Design & Research Institute, Theatre Projects, and Nagata Acoustics. The main auditorium, Harmony Hall, features five levels and three balconies, with a seating capacity of 2,000. The complex also includes restaurants, galleries, and educational facilities, making it a vibrant cultural destination.
